Dental Crowns

Dentist Appointment

What is the Purpose of Dental Crowns?

Your dentist may recommend having a crown placed over your tooth enamel for several reasons, such as having a weak tooth that needs a bridge to hold it in place. Or, you may choose to have it done for cosmetic reasons, like if you have a tooth that’s very discolored.

Dental crowns can be made using several different materials, including ceramic, porcelain, resin, and stainless steel. There are pros and cons to each one, but Dr. Omid Termechi can go over them in detail with you during your initial consultation.

What is the Procedure Like?

Typically, having a dental crown placed involves two visits to the office. During the first visit, we will make sure your tooth can support a crown. Then, the existing enamel on the tooth will be filed down to make room for the crown. An impression of your tooth will then be taken, as well as the surrounding teeth. Finally, we will place a temporary crown over the tooth until the permanent one is completed.

Once the permanent crown is ready to go, you will have your second appointment to have it placed. It may take some getting used to, but it should look and function like a normal tooth would once the initial adjustment period passes.
